Sand Key - Page 6

We've headed south about 100 feet to another coral subject that has been going through major changes. A year prior to the 1998 coral bleaching event many colonies of this particular species of coral began exhibiting very unusual signs, discoloration in the coral pigment, swelling of the polyps, as well as a flattening of the polyps. In many instances a white puss-like material streamed out of the mouth of the polyps. Four years later the ailment continues and it is clear that coral loss has resulted from these phenomena.
