Compared to the brilliant white typical of white coral disease, some of the elkhorn corals we are snorkeling over tell a different story. The presence of a slight coral color suggests that coral bleaching is taking effect

The line between healthy coral and the affected coral on the upper branch is not as definite as that of the diseased coral however, there appears to be a definitive edge on the lower branch.

Because of the need for scientific proof to determine the exact cause of these coral ailments, we can only record our findings and share our observations. The need for frequent monitoring is important because after algae covers a sick or bleached coral it is impossible to determine the exact cause of it's death.
