New handbook for marine protected areas marks start of worldwide campaign ‘Homes for Whales and Dolphins’

“Marine protected areas are steadily getting bigger which is good news for large marine predators with big habitats. Comparing the top 15 areas in 2005 to 2011, the average size has gone from just over 100,000 km2 to 220,591 km2,” says Erich Hoyt, author of Marine Protected Areas for Whales, Dolphins and Porpoises: A world handbook for cetacean habitat conservation and planning, published by Earthscan, in association with the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS).
But, he adds, “these are the largest areas; most MPAs worldwide are still too small, too few and far between, with too little enforcement, to protect whale and other mobile marine animal habitats.” Read the full article
