Reef Relief would like to thank everyone who helped make this years International Coastal Cleanup a success. Volunteers took local action to heart on Saturday September 21st and 22nd by cleaning the shores of No Name Key and Archer Key. The combined total of these cleanups was over 1000 lbs. Volunteers removed debris from the mangroves and recorded specific types of marine debris found, allowing the Ocean Conservancy to compile, analyze and track this data year by year and make discoveries about behaviors that cause debris. This information is used to educate the public, business, industry and government officials about the problem.
Among the debris removed from the mangroves included buoys, lots of plastics, tires, trap line, dozens of aluminum cans, a kitty litter box, an eight-track and more. A big thanks to Big Pine Kayak Adventures and Danger Charters for hosting these events and to all the volunteers including members of the Key West High School Reef Relief Club.
