Toy giant Mattel has tossed its SeaWorld Barbie doll overboard, reportedly in response to the ongoing controversy surrounding the treatment of animals by the decades-old water park chain.
Mattel Inc has confirmed that it has ended production of its SeaWorld-themed items, including the original ‘trainer’ doll, a move cheered by animal rights group PETA, which has long been a leading critic of the theme park for its treatment of killer whales.
Mattel spokesman Alex Clark said production of the doll ended when a license agreement with SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment expired last year. He did not say why the deal was not renewed however a spokesperson for SeaWorld has suggested that the toy company based its decision on complaints made by PETA and other environmentalist organizations.
