Reef Relief recognizes Zachary Totton, Brian East, Jon Maravilla, Thurman Scott II, Amos Goble, Trey Cundiff, and Ricky Ray from the U.S. Coast Guard as the organization’s Environmental Citizens of the Month for their work in the recent cleanup of the mangroves adjacent to Smathers Beach. These 7 volunteers and Reef Relief removed over 370lbs of debris, most of which was plastic items. September is Micro-plastic awareness month and the Coast Guard is bringing awareness to this issue by their efforts. By honoring local citizens each month, Reef Relief aims to help all island residents become stewards of the environment.
