This Wednesday, June 21st at 5:30 pm at City Hall, the Commissioners are holding a workshop to discuss parking needs and the proposed parking garage solution.
Our fight is not over yet! We ask if you are in Key West that you please attend this meeting in support of Reef Relief and the other businesses that will be negatively affected.
A proposal has been made for a four-story parking garage in the heart of Old Town Key West in the Historic Seaport. This proposal will have a drastic negative impact on local workers and businesses in the Seaport including Reef Relief!
The proposal would mean tearing down the Reef Relief “office space” to create this massive parking garage. Anyone who knows Reef Relief knows that our environmental center is far from just an office! It is a home to many of our education programs including our Coral Camp for Kids. This summer, we will host over 200 students in our center for our ocean themed summer camp program to learn about our local ecosystems and how to become positive stewards of our environment. Over 5,000 students participated in our various education programs in the 2016-2017 school year and we hope to continue that program’s growth in the 2017-2018 school year.
Many of the tourists who visit our Historic Bight before getting out on the water stop by our center first to educate themselves on proper marine etiquette for Florida Keys diving, snorkeling, and fishing. Our location is absolutely CRUCIAL to continue to educate our out of town guests.
Additionally, these parking garages will be adding more dangerous auto traffic to our already choked roads and will put hundreds of people out of work. It is not just Reef Relief in danger! Do not let them destroy our beautiful, historic, working waterfront!
