Coral Reef Fact:
A turtle excluder device or TED is a mechanism that allows sea turtles to escape when caught in a fisherman’s net. In 1987 the US required all shrimp trawling boats to use TEDs & in 1988 the shrimp-turtle law was enacted, requiring that all countries the USA imports shrimp from certify that the shrimp were harvested by boats equipped with TEDs. TEDs have reduced sea turtle deaths due to drowning in trawling nets. Learn more
