Call for Entry 

The student film competition is designed to give students the opportunity to showcase their creativity and knowledge of the ocean through their filmmaking skills to an elite jury of professional filmmakers, ocean conservationists and educators.  Winners will receive a prize (1st, 2nd and 3rd place) and experience their films on the big screen during a special screening at the 10th Annual San Francisco International Ocean Film Festival in March 2013. Entries are being accepted nationally and internationally.

Students will make a “big splash”, and have their voices heard through filmmaking!  Creativity and ingenuity is highly encouraged.

 Competition Guidelines 

Subject material should be ocean-related, touching upon one or all of the following categories;

  • Ocean environments
  • Ocean science
  • Ocean cultures
  • Ocean sports
  • Ocean wildlife
  • Our land based connections to the ocean
  • National Marine Sanctuaries
  • Why we need the ocean

Winning films will be chosen on the basis of artistic technique and the ability to create a film essay that leaves the audience better informed and/or moved about the ocean

Films to be made entirely by a student or group of students

Film length: 5 minutes or less

Age divisions: Middle, and High School Students
